Like any good mother, her desire was to have her child grow bright and bold, and to be full of good humor and wit, and to be generous and courageous and kind.

For, being such, how could anyone not have the most beautiful story?

After all, what is the code and concept of life, of living, of humanity, if it is not to find one's calling and to have that calling be greater than one's self; if it is not to pursue that calling and complete it with joyous self-respect?

_ Neville

Do It Differently

Courage is NOT fearlessness. Fear is a tricky professor. Being courageous and unwise is the plight of a fool.

"Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity." Martin Luther King, Jr.

If any or all of that proves true then what is courage? Why courage? How does one get courage? When and where is courage worth its muster?

Quite likely the dream you've designed, the calling you've accepted, the path you've chosen, the place you emerged, the company you keep, the cause you champion, will point you to where light has never been, to where light is no longer available, to where the only light that is able to reveal what's hidden there is the light you take with you. You face a stark choice: to go or not to go.

Quite likely, in that dark as surely as in any light (no matter how bright) along the ways of your journey, forces with no interest in your well-being, no interest in your well-doing, no interest in you continuing unless you pawn your interest in the furtherance of their interest, will confront you to forestall you at the measure of and in accordance with the force of their own interest. You will be faced with an unpleasant choice. Choose wisely.

Say, too, you are stalled in the sweltering heat of a crammed parking lot, not knowing the path forward nor the process that would get you through rough traffic, having so little patience and less gas. You are now faced with a courageous choice, my friend.

Welcome to Act Three of The Seven Cees - Courage - curated by Neville DeAngelou, cognizant of a recurring need: lives seeking enrichment, not knowing how to be enhanced, choosing short-cuts winding into swamps and out on to dead ends - recurring sufferings and misery.

Act Three: Courage

In the toss of many words few perform sweet puppetry in all of us. God utters this word and that word, and we behold wonders. So is heard. And so is said. The mind of a champion, the soul of a hero, the spirit of a believer, the will of a survivor, are swept and swooned into the realms of greatness on the wings of just a few words. Such words are like mustard seeds.

ILICET - A Time To Begin Again

Our ability to do the thing that frightens us; that is courage according to our Oxford Dictionary. Our ability to control our fear in a dangerous or difficult situation, and to be brave and confident enough to do what we believe in; that is courage according to our Cambridge Dictionary.

Courage is the quality of mind that enables us to face danger, fear, or vicissitudes with self-possession, confidence, and resolution. If there is no genuine fear, no genuine danger, no untoward difficulty, no courage is required, just the decision to do what needs to be done - then to do that as best one can!

Those are the definitions to which this discourse applies. Those are the attributes to which fellow travelers ascribe, and seek to conquer (repeatedly) in our fervor to pursue as well as accomplish our mission.

My dear friends, should anyone opt to exercise available authority to banish all fear, or should someone be favored a path along which there is no obstacle, no challenge, no danger, no genuine difficulty, then along such a pollyannaish route there is no need of courage. Go with God's speed. Hop merrily along.

Here, wisdom recommends courage, not a search for easy nor the fear of hard.

So, where does one find courage? Hmmm?

Courageous

"Isn't it amazing what a boy with a slingshot, a few pebbles, a good brain, and an unconquerable will can do? This is the question a missionary posed to our Sunday School class years later. That night, however, on that box, mommy's eyes and teeth flashed under the starlight and I felt her breath as this story bounced and swirled from her like an expertly tossed yoyo, and this time, David's triumph over Goliath informed me in a very different way." What did the people see?

[ ILICET - A Time To Begin Again ]

The surrender of the PRISONER, the surrender of the SOLDIER, the surrender of the LOVER; those are not all the same surrender - neither by intention nor by outcome.

BE AWARE OF YOUR SURRENDER and to what or whom.

Incompetence and cowardice are bitter enemies of the soul.

Keep growing. Keep learning. Keep working it.

One step into these surrounding hills you can have your feast on glorious survivals: courageous souls who met Moby Dick eye-to-eye; brave souls who for a second and two and three and four climbed upon Moby Dick's back; skilled souls whose slick harpoons drew blood from the monster, so much so, the hurtling waters boiled with new color; sweet souls who swam and dove relentlessly for hours; so many souls with mighty tales - every last one of them still in these hills. Survivors! Slapped back onto shore, or slipped, or somehow was slighted! Oh, such moving tales they tell: a hand lost, a leg gone, an eye no longer right, huge chunks of flesh gouged. Survivors, they all are. Their stories can lift you to the top of these hills above which the golden sun rises. They survived! But they still have not crossed these waters. There is only way across . . .

Riding Moby Dick

You are valued. You are important. What you experience is important. Your intention matters. You are a whole being. You are a true wonder. You diminish yourself whenever you pit valued elements of who you are against vital elements of who you are: your intuitive self against your intellectual self, your rational self against your emotional self, your gut against your heart against your head. Don't be put at war against yourself: you are a masterpiece. An intricate being. Human!

Remember The Time

Courage is a skill. It is not a thing one is born with. Curiosity is. Courage is a skill one learns. Curiosity is its school. Cowardice is the home some are born into, then learning no better are left locked away. Trapped. Unrewarded. Imprisoned. Cowardice is the lock on that door. Courage is the key.

Curiosity is a soul-song beckoning farther, wider, deeper through creation's wonder. Where curiosity is buried cowardice lives. It thrives there, in a packed cemetery - an unkempt graveyard. Crows flock there aplenty. Cowards die there many times before their death - a slow and ungraceful demise. Unremarkably. Bone dry.

Courage is the skill to rise up. Courage is the skill to stand up. Courage is the skill to run and not grow weary, to walk and not faint, to fly as with wings of eagles. Courage is a skill that is learned. It requires practice.

It takes courage to be humble; cowards bow down. It takes courage not to quit; cowards give up. It takes courage to be honest; cowardice is the stuff of hypocrites. Of necessity! Courage is a skill sharpened on the rubs of purposeful action. Solid intention. The coward's proficiency is inaction. Excuses aplenty! It takes courage to open one's eyes and see.

We need courage to win the battle against brutality. We need courage to win the battle against abuse. We need courage to give wide berth to the battle that is not ours to entertain, or be drafted into, that battle already won. It requires no courage to be a bully. It requires no courage to abuse. It requires no courage to be judgmental. It requires no courage to be a master's fool. Compassion requires courage.

It takes courage to be wise. Clever thieves relieve giddy fools of precious jewels in exchange for the glory of suffering, these having so soon forgotten Jesus already paid the price, won the battle, owns the glory. It takes courage to be wise. Giddy fools sell their birthright for sunlight and their dignity for a grain of rice. It takes courage to be wise.

Courage is a skill. Nothing - absolutely nothing - sharpens courage better than practice. We need courage. Do you remember what curiosity revealed the first time - the time courage took you through the dark and into the park - a new creation - where you were lavished in pure wonder? Remember Jesus - as a child. I remember David too. And Mandella. And Naomi. I remember my mother - Mary. And what she tells me. Choose not to be bamboozled by pious platitudes designed by thieves to fatten fools then delivered by stools for a share of the steal. It takes courage to choose - wisely.

Courage is a skill. It is the skill we need. Some wolves wear sheep's clothing then enter the coop, and dare not smile beside, lest we see their teeth. You'll need courage in the chciken coup facing that ravenous pack, and strength in the knees. And there will be a blood-bath.

Courage is never easy, but the labors of a coward is hard - always hard. Courage is the key. It is the skill we need. It takes courage to be smart - to respectfully use one's faculties. It takes courage to be awesome. Be awesome.

Life: it is a dance. It gets better with practice; its music is in your heart and in your soul and in your blood and in your bones. Life; it is a dance. It gets better with practice. You have a partner – your spirit. You can have a party if you like, but choose smartly who you invite, for life – your life – is a dance. It gets better with practice, unless you stop the music or so crowd your dance floor there is no space to move or be moved within it. Explore. Yes, life; it is a dance. It gets better with practice until the dance becomes the dancer and the dancer becomes the dance and life and all of existence becomes a singular flow. Yes, life; it is a dance. The Great Teller shares An Epic Truth

Across the nation and around the world there is a long rumble.

It is a rumble so loud it strikes ready ears as a distant clap of a fierce thunder. It is a rumble so low, it rides beneath the noise of a thousand human fears; it can no longer be heard. Fear of flight, fear of heights, fear of sand, fear of snow, fear of monsters in the closet, fear of bugs in the pillow, fear of cats, fear of bats, fear of strangers at the door, fear of being lost, fear of being laughed at, fear of being stuck in the toilet bowl, fear of whites, fear of blacks, fear of browns, blues and yellows, fear of nakedness, fear of the unknown, fear of being hurt.

Fear!

"Live Your Life - Live it well. You are worth it."

Listen. Learn. Lead.

Task at Hand: 1) Let it be established: you are going to face challenges, obstacles, difficulties, obstructions, criticisms, detractors, (yes, even devils and demons) - do not turn these into mysteries; prepare accordingly. 2) Know and understand your game plan and why you are playing the game. 3) Take action - make continuous improvements. 4) Work towards consistency. 5) Nurture appropriate relationships - fruitful relationships are not one-way avenues. 6) Enhance your faculties. 7) Stay healthy. Be awesome.

Something to remember: Keep simple things simple. Do the simple things. Don't shy away from the tough things. Ascertain whether you still believe in what you are reaching to achieve and act accordingly. Know what you need to rein in and what has run its course. Make the necessary adjustments. Go for the goal. This is your life. It's your call. It's your dream. Do you deserve it?
