“When Paul said all things are permissable but not all things are beneficial, he was right. Everything that God has in all of creation is laid out before us. We have to have the wisdom, the discernment; we have to have a co-pilot, we have to have a backseat driver, that is reminding us all the time those things that are permissible may not be beneficial for you, but they may be beneficial for somebody else, but that's the wisdom of God." And that's another cool thing my Senior Pastor told us.

ARISE |
"Be weary of the naked man offering you a shirt."
"Words matter. They shape the way we understand ourselves, the way we interpret the world, and the way we treat others." |
"Kindness is the by product of all the great virtues." |
This is our third reflection on leadership through which we have opportunities to recognize, refurbish and affirm those awesome qualities available to God's children: attributes that might help us to build, balance, and lift as desired. I'm just this second back from the wedding of one of my students, Rui Tang, a doctoral candidate, married to Sarah, a succeding Dentist. It was a gorgeous wedding performed in The Chapel of The Woods. I felt privileged to be included, especially so, for the stage of my personal journey. Many Chinese (family, immigrants and visitors), a diverse gathering of ethnicities and nationalities, warm, joyous, welcoming, friendly and curious; i found the occasion fascinating. A slightly bent old chinese woman (couldn't be much more than four feet tall) helped to the stage, and speaking in Chinese (an interpreter beside her), took the microphone. With hardly a beat she arrested our attention - mine, at least - with a passion and flair unanticipated, teasing out of the biblical story of Jonathan's love for David, such touches of wisdom and grounding, she lifted the bride and groom and us over that rainbow codifying God's promise to Noah and right into the heart and nature and value and wisdom of real love - the kind that works well in the every day battle of life, she told us - the kind that Jonathan and David shared with each other. Wow! With the image I have of David and the image I have of Saul, it all called into my mind this chinese saying, "The true warriior is one who conquers himself." It makes me wonder if that is not a marvelous leaderhip attribute - a working out of the great virtues. See what you think.
Here are Four Cardinal or Root Virtues we might reflect on. Perhaps we might enjoy chewing on each of these a little later through the season, but why wait; have a great feast.
COURAGE (from the heart)
TEMPERANCE (balance)
WISDOM (prudence)
JUSTICE
You were born for such a time as this. There are exemplary leaders among us, flawed as we all are, working out these virtues throughout the challenges of living within or without community, many unaware of the strength of their leadership. "These kind of people are geniuses in the art of living, more necessary to the dignity, security and joy of humanity than the discoverers of objective knowledge." Albert Einstein |
Kick off your shoes! |
There are many types of leadership styles. Twelve is a good number, some more successful or more appropriate than others in particular situations and settings. We'll come to that later. How about 'we' sit back for a bit, scratch our heads (or each other's), and start on the inside (or us)? Thoughts on being a leader!

Something To Consider |
"Fundamentally, a leader is like a parent. Just like a parent, we put the lives of our children before our own. You want them to grow up, become confident and go on and achieve more than we could for ourselves. Leaders are exactly the same. Leaders are the ones who are willing to risk, when it matters, their own interest so that others may advance." Simon Sinek. |
