The Last Marco Polo, a fictional love story blossoming in 1937 Shanghai on the eve of the Sino-Japanese War, is set against the background of historical events and places few people today know anything about.
Jack Wells took an overseas assignment at the Hongkong and Shangjhai Bank in Shanghai, a city of contrasting opulence and crushing poverty. After settling into a comfortable expatriate lifestyle in the French Concession part of the city, Jack met a beautiful girl at the New Hope Church, where his father was its pastor. Their mutual attraction was blossoming when war broke out between China and Japan. Very quickly their lives were thrown together and tirelessly they tried to find food to feed the homeless now residing in the church.
An unexpected turn of events forced these lovers to travel to Nanking where they witnessed the horrors of the Nanking Massacre. Within a few weeks 250,000 Chinese were killed at the hands of the Japanese soldiers. As this violence was ripping China apart, their courage and compassion in the face of death were remarkable, and in the process Jack gained a deeper understanding of Chinese history as well as China's Century of Humiliation, an era that is still shaping modern Chinese history today.
Love begins, as it often does, with that chance encounter or that effervescent smile, but little did Jack know that their chance encounter would blossom into true love as they experienced a series of life altering events. Ultimately, though karma brought them togeter, history would keep them apart. Such is this beautiful love story which progressively unfolds for readers of The Last Marco Polo. |
