Being Fit

. . . .

You would be on point thinking,

as much as you have the deepest abiding respect for the courage, character and conviction of an icon who assailed insurmountable odds to place an enduring mark on this universe, that icon is not you.

You are different.

Your journey is different.

Your space is different.

Your time is different.

Your odds will never be the same as anyone else's even if both of you are bent on the same achievement.

I am made in the image of God, not your image of God.

Quotes from the General Minister & President

This encounter with Joseph is a rather dramatic one, and it's one that is frought with some tension.

Joseph and his brothers are being united after decades, and their last encounter was one that will make this one something that the brothers would fear.

. . .

We are told that while the brothers see Joseph approaching from afar, before he came near, they conspired to kill him.

That's pretty dramatic for siblings to think about one another and its sort of takes sibling rivalry to a whole new level.

Now they were prepared to do that, but two of the brothers would intervene.

We are told that Ruben would say to the brothers, let's not go so far as to kill him, let's just throw him into this deep chasm, this pit, and if he can rescue himself from that, good!

And that's what they do.

And after they throw him in there they see on the horizon a wandering team of Ishmaelites going by, and Judah another brother said, I've got an even better idea, 'cause maybe he will die down there, let's pull him out and sell him intto slavery to the Ishmaelites.

That's what they did.

And from that point forward they sort of lose touch with Joseph.

Now it's a long story from there to where we are in the 50th chapter here, but at this point, Jacob their father having died, and before his death saying to the brothers I want you to reunite with Joseph, I want you to find a way to forgive each other.

Because of that they have found their way to Joseph.

But in addition to what they just did to him, there is a second thing here that causes them a great deal of trepidation in the reunion, for now Joseph had risen to second in power only to the Pharoah of Egypt.

Kinda makes you wander: how does a poor Israelite thrown into a pit and sold into slavery to the Ishmaleites end up second in command to the Pharoah, but you have to go back into Genesis to figure that out, and fill in the missing pieces.

But here he is.

So the brothers, because they know what they did to him, and because they know who he is, they have every reason to be afraid of the encounter with him, and yet there they were.

And it turned out to be a beautiful thing. Joseph didn't harbor any feelings of revenge or anger. In fact, he wept with them upon reuniting and forgave them.

Now this story is being told in the context of a series of sermons that you all are hearing, entitled, "The Bible Doesn't Say That." And in the context in particular this week of something the bible doesn't say, which is, 'there is a reason for everything.'

In response to that, Joseph offers this profoundly theological statement in front of his brothers at the time of the re-union, explaining why he is not going to seek revenge, when he says, "What you intended for evil, God has turned to good."

This is an important theological understanding.

The s/hero Gene

Revelation + Mystery. We love stories. Able stories transport us out from the boundaries of our skin through the peepholes of life's absurdities into new worlds where we recognize ourselves anew. But why are we so drawn to the worlds of the hero and shero? What is so captivating about an ordinary person who when pushed rises to extraordinariness, perseveres through struggle, needing no one's permission to do the bigger thing in the face of death? Is it for want of hope? Inspiration? Insight? Is it in search of the braveheart's alchemy - that secret magic which converts vulnerability into courage, fortitude, bravery, intelligence, strength? Could it be, rather, that we are thumbing through intrigue for evidence of the existence of a particular gene - the s/hero gene - wondering who amongst us is its carrier? If in fact there is such a gene - the s/hero gene - how likely is it that you are a carrier?

Let us examine that probability.

Spectacular. What a design? Triggered by a thought. 80 billion brain cells. Thousands of synapses formed every second during our early years turn these brain cells into a phenomenal problem-solving, memory storage network, and complex task-performing machine. "What you do during this crucial period changes the very structure of your brain forever." Synaptic pathways grow and connect in response to our everyday interaction with our world. It is here that patterns we repeat again and again throughout life is created.

In an essential energy-saving mechanism, unused synapses, which are "the most energy hungry component of your brain" are pruned away forever, saving you precious resources. Your brain - 2% of your body's weight - uses 20% of your calorie intake. Synaptic pruning - the snipping away of unused pathways and damaged cells - continues throughout your life. You've heard it before: if you don't use it you lose it. "This complex pattern of growth and pruning back is what makes us so different and individual." Every brain grows differently. Your brain serves you! Devotedly. You are an uncommon work of art sculptured by what you think and what you do! Extraordinary. But are you a masterpiece - the carrier of the superhero gene? Can you beat the odds - every time?

a work of outstanding artistry, skill, or workmanship.

Come, let us all be friends for once,
Let us make life easy on us,
Let us be lovers and loved ones,
The earth shall be left to no one.

"I see my future in your eyes." Ed Sheeran, Perfect.

Many folks express being caught in a familar quandary. Not sure if they have a natural born talent. Not sure if they are gifted. Not sure if what they have (a kind of 'doing while being' they feel most connected to on the inside) is a gift, a talent, a skill that is effortless, or some other 'taggable' thing.

Some others experience that quandary in a very different way. Not sure if their 'naturalness' is a privilege or an advantage, a thing of pride or exceptionalism, a blessing (feeling "chosen") or a sick burden (a curse to be pawned off at the next pink elephant gathering) since it requires no pain on their part and renders itself so easily their biggest struggle is boredom.

All of the above may turn out to be simply an egocentric trap. However, in this session we are not attempting to resolve those issues, we are on a mission. We are on the dig for actionable discoveries. And we are sharing what we find. Come along, you'll understand it better by and by.

Today, our discovered action-ability is related to Gets, Gifts & Hand-Me-Downs - a thing that has catapulted quite a few known folks into new orbits. A thing that opens up pathways beyond known limits and facilitates overcoming challenges. Let's explore this thing.

Share what you find.

Take in these two fascinating stories

You have a gift. Quite likely you have a spread of gifts. That's not the issue. We need to find the issue, if there is one, and resolve that. Look a little deeper. Look beyond what may appear to be a phenomenon. And it is. Take it all in.

Think about this: what if Carson's parent did not take notice, did not respond to what she noticed, did not know what to do, did not take the actions she took, or was ignored when she did, or the opportunity to do what she did was not available? Think about it.

Why think about it?

For one! I put to you that this beginning scenario occurs repeatedly every day across the globe, and is missed, ignored, unattended, squashed, laughed at, shoved aside - sometimes knowingly. That's an issue. A huge issue! A resolvable issue. Not necessarily yours. But it's not just their loss. We all lose. You'll see.

We are not talking about "giftedness" nor about being a "prodigy" or "special" - this is about recognizing natural gifts - the unique elements of an intricately designed masterpiece - You, Ed Sheeran, The Carsons. This is entirely about that usable gift which is unique to the individual, e.g., YOU. You have a gift.

What actually is that gift?

First, it is essential to appreciate this. Where we are - in our realm - under our Birthday trees - for purposes of pure clarity - a gift is just that: a gift. Here, a gift is not a thing earned. It is not a thing of favor. It is not a thing for a favor. A thing offered with expectation of something in return is not a gift - not here. (That is an exchange or an investment or perhaps a bribe or a trap - not a gift. Not here.) A gift is not a payment of any kind for any thing, by any measure. A gift - here - is presented purely from the heart and wealth and will and at the favor of the giver. Period! Full Stop! You are loved! Do what you will with it. Thank you very much.

Yes, you have a gift. Quite likely you have a spread of gifts. Your miracle is with you. Your catapult is in your hand. Heart? Soul? Mind? Quibble if you wish.

There are intrinsic gifts and extrinsic gifts.
Quite likely you have both.

Your intrinsic gift came with you; it is part and parcel of you. You've had it since you were a child. You will need it. That's what we have found. (See RMD)

Extrinsic gifts are gifts from beyond you. These are made available to you. You may need these too - that depends! (See RMD)

What is your gift?
Unwrap it.

Dig it up.
If you want to beat your odds - every time - you must. You'll see why.

Found it? Them? Shredded scrappings?

Here's the challenge! Be aware. You have choices! You may have already exercised those choices. Here is an ooops! Those choices might have been already exercised on your behalf. Ooops! Choose wisely. You are about to be thrusted into a live experiment. M-hm. Predators waiting.

Your Gift

  • You can accept it
  • You can reject it
  • You can accept it and like it or dislike it
  • You can accept it and use it or ignore it
  • You can reject it and wish you hadn't
  • You can reject it and return to request it
  • You can request it and discover it spoiled or expired
  • Your proxy may have already exercised one of those for you!
- Riding Moby Dick

Isn't life exciting?
Which action did you choose?

Choose then The Fun Begins!

A gift is no good to you if you don't know you have it, don't know how to use it, don't learn how to use it, and you don't use it. Kept unused a gift is nothing but eye candy. And that soon melts in the heat.

Potential is just that: potential. It is but a puff of air if not converted into its capability - and at best, wisely, to its fullest extent. It is your payload. You are its vessel. You are its instrument. You are the rocket-commander. Your mind is the rocket fuel. Do what you love. Love what you do.

You can choose not to use your gift; you may have no other choice, but that is an entirely different deal not covered in this session. Many do. Remember: this is your life; only you can live it. Do - don't not do - what must be done to live YOUR life well. Highly recommended.

So what do you do?

You have to GET what the mission needs. You'll need to equip yourself for the getting of it. Resourcefulness. Perseverance. Knowledge. Commitment. That combination is what it takes to equip yourself for the mission. GET what the mission needs.

You'll have to GET what you need. You are the bearer of this precious gift. Re-fuel. Re-tool. Re-train. Re-set. Step by step. Stage by stage. As necessary. GET what you need. True, some folks happen to be where the getting is easy. Ooops! Settle your heart elsewhere. GET what you need.

Blood, sweat or pain, Odds-Beaters get what is necessary. This getting is never about blood, sweat and pain; it is always about the getting. For the odds-beater, there is a huge difference.

Let me explain what we have found (in this go around) with these odds-beaters.

You can spill your blood, spend your sweat and endure phenomenal pain in slavish service to a brutish master. A beast. That master might even be you, might even be ego, might even be stifling beliefs, might even be contortionist ideals, might even be your fears, might even be greed. That's not how phenomenal odds-beaters invest their life-force. Not these phenomenal odds-beaters! These have no slave master; they are in love. They are in love with a childhood dream. They were kids when they fell in love. Do what you love; love what you do.

These odds-beaters have a compelling vision. The sight of some other, no matter how practically lighter, or fanciful, or pretty, or easy, is to these far more blood-letting, sweaty, painful and burdensome than the journey to their dream. They are not drawn to those odds. Those odds to these are as the banging of the head against a concrete wall for nothing at all. But the blood, sweat and pain on a mission to their vision is booster-oil for their fuel. High grade. Premium.

That's the difference. Huge.

GET: Glean - Become - Procure - Secure.

No difficulty can discourage, no obstacle dismay, no trouble dishearten the man who has acquired the art of being alive. Difficulties are but dares of fate, obstacles but hurdles to try his skill, troubles but bitter tonics to give him strength; and he rises higher and looms greater after each encounter with adversity.

Ella Wheeler Wilcox

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness
That most frightens us.

We ask ourselves
Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.

Your playing small
Does not serve the world.
There's nothing enlightened about shrinking
So that other people won't feel insecure around you.

We are all meant to shine,
As children do.
We were born to make manifest
The glory of God that is within us.

It's not just in some of us;
It's in everyone.

And as we let our own light shine,
We unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we're liberated from our own fear,
Our presence automatically liberates others.

- Marianne Williamson

Say you misplaced, damaged or bartered away your natural gift?
Try this experiment.

Experiment #1: rewiire a battered brain for natural-born success.
routines mentors
habits partnerships

Underlying bases for this voluntary experiment:

you are brilliantly designed with a remarkable brain consisting of 80 billion brain cells - lots to work with

synaptic pruning is an ongoing process; what's gone is gone; too bad

new synapses - new connections - new pathways - these are ongoing activities of a healthy human brain - is your brain healthy

new and different thoughts and actions build new and different connections (accordingly), in that same while synaptic-pruning snips away unused paths and unused connections, improving the possibility for rebuilding a new kind of naturalness - new balance - new focus - new rhythm - when re-designed accordingly

Disclaimer: we accept absolutely no responsibility for the formation and discovery of your new genius. Or vice-versa. You are welcome to take full credit. Or consult your approved doctor.

Now do the following (click for help):

Just look at you now. Smile. You are awesome. More experiments to come.

So, are you an odds-beater?

Not sure? Commit, my friend. Commit.

Discovery: Odds-beaters use their natural gifts; they synchronize their gifts and their mission with their vision. Odds-beaters have a vision that is greater than self. Odds-beaters recognize when they get a break and a new path opens; they are very prepared to make the jump and take it.

Action Plan: Realize what you have - the incredible gift that life has bestowed you (WITHSTAND EVERY REJECTION - COMMIT). Acquire the skills and counsel that will facilitate YOU being in service of your VITAL vision. Why not start now. I find myself at times reflecting upon this line from Hunger Games. "At some point, you have to stop running and turn around and face whoever wants you dead. The hard thing is finding the courage to do it." (What about you?) Have you found the courage?

Hardest Thing You Will Ever Do

My Golden Chalice

"Everything you need to know you learn along the journey." _ Riding Moby Dick

Have a breather. You deserve one. Check this out.

The Hunks I Dreamed by Neville DeAngelou

Every new era is marked by a challenge that reveals the true nature of its character, its soul, its heart, our very being; a challenge so pervasive, so corrosive, so corrupting, it indulges our need for respite; a challenge that demands a new breed - A Breed Beyond The Hero.

No doubt you've heard about the holy grail. It is a legend told differently through different literary and religious traditions. You are probably most familiar with it as the chalice used by Jesus in the last supper, and that the rich man, Joseph of Arimithea who begged for the body of Christ after his crucifixtion, filled it with the blood of Christ, and kept it, and hid it.

You probably also have heard of King Arthur and the Knights of The Round Table, and also of the many extravagant expeditions dispatched to retrieve this hidden cup, and of reported miracles associated with it, and of awful killings.

You might even say to me you know exactly where that cup is today. Awesome.

You probably also guessed I am not about to delve into any detail of the whats and whos and whens and whereabouts of said cup or chalice.

You are correct.

But, for sure I do want to share something about it. Something spectacular. And for whatever it is worth I am calling this spectacular thing, this Golden Chalice, a Hand-Me-Down. And that that it is incredibly amazing.

Who knows, you may also be ready to rush in to correct me, and even tell me that you are quite familiar with hand-me-downs, and that you find very little to associate hand-me-downs with incredible and spectacular and amazing and awesome, even worse to be told that from here on out this hand-me-down will become for you a never-will-you-ever-forget-it thing. Well, that's a pity.

However, that is exactly what is about to happen now.

Are you ready?

Oh, let me ease the suspense a little, give you another breather - watch this.

Where was I? Yes. My Golden Chalice - Hand-Me-Downs - that third pole of a thing that has catapulted so many "blessed" folks into new orbits. A thing that opens up pathways beyond known limits and facilitates overcoming challenges.

The Chalice! So many beautiful components to it. Sometimes I think of it as the ring. There is so much I could tell. Sometimes it takes me back to the first gifts I ever recieved from friends: Rexford and Theodore. Oooh! Unforgettable memory. Sometimes I think of it as pure love. Goosebumps. Now I know it as a Golden Chalice - glittering through my entire being. The most awesome hand-me-down.

When Jesus used the cup and passed it around to his friends, as told in the story of his Last Supper, he said, "Do this in remembrance of me." Well, indeed, he did say more than that, but this is not a sermon, this is pure unadulaterated remarkable excitement.

You see, to this day, throughout christendom, practically every day, you find folks here, there and everywhere passing around some semblance of a chalice or cup reminding each other to remember: it's been handed down literally from hand to hand, lip to lip, tear to tear, joy to joy, from then till now. It's a hand-me-down!

And I've noticed something that always gets me revved up and raring to go, a thing, oh how I wish folks would grab and take hold. Every odds-beater I have met or am inspired by who beats his or her odds every time has a gift, a get, and a hand-me-down - something way bigger than the self that they are devoted to passing on, something that lifts others up, something that sets the marks of love on breaths of life - yes, a hand-me-down. Martin Luther King. Helen Keller. Rosa Parks. Frederick Douglas. St. Francis of Assisi. Way bigger than self - a hand-me-down. Glo-rey! Oh, Jesus. What a man, what a man, what a mighty good man.
