The s/hero Gene

Revelation + Mystery. We love stories. Able stories transport us out from the boundaries of our skin through the peepholes of life's absurdities into new worlds where we recognize ourselves anew. But why are we so drawn to the worlds of the hero and shero? What is so captivating about an ordinary person who when pushed rises to extraordinariness, perseveres through struggle, needing no one's permission to do the bigger thing in the face of death? Is it for want of hope? Inspiration? Insight? Is it in search of the braveheart's alchemy - that secret magic which converts vulnerability into courage, fortitude, bravery, intelligence, strength? Could it be, rather, that we are thumbing through intrigue for evidence of the existence of a particular gene - the s/hero gene - wondering who amongst us is its carrier? If in fact there is such a gene - the s/hero gene - how likely is it that you are a carrier?

Let us examine that probability.

Spectacular. What a design? Triggered by a thought. 80 billion brain cells. Thousands of synapses formed every second during our early years turn these brain cells into a phenomenal problem-solving, memory storage network, and complex task-performing machine. "What you do during this crucial period changes the very structure of your brain forever." Synaptic pathways grow and connect in response to our everyday interaction with our world. It is here that patterns we repeat again and again throughout life is created.

In an essential energy-saving mechanism, unused synapses, which are "the most energy hungry component of your brain" are pruned away forever, saving you precious resources. Your brain - 2% of your body's weight - uses 20% of your calorie intake. Synaptic pruning - the snipping away of unused pathways and damaged cells - continues throughout your life. You've heard it before: if you don't use it you lose it. "This complex pattern of growth and pruning back is what makes us so different and individual." Every brain grows differently. Your brain serves you! Devotedly. You are an uncommon work of art sculptured by what you think and what you do! Extraordinary. But are you a masterpiece - the carrier of the superhero gene? Can you beat the odds - every time?

Here is the revealing drama. You arrived here - in this era - your chosen turn. This is your proving ground. You arrived especially charged, suited to be equipped for a challenge. To get where you are going you must cross the howling waters then go through the fondling forest. You will have to ride Moby Dick. And stay alive. You will face the beast. You will be confronted by The Liar, The Witch and The Thief. Can you make it past their predatory traps? This is for real - your life. How has it been this far? How will you avoid being duped, hoodwinked, bamboozled - decieved? Obliterated? Do you have what it takes to beat shuffling odds? Yes? Press on. Not sure? Tag along a short while longer.

The underlying bases for this voluntary experiment:

you are brilliantly designed with a remarkable brain consisting of 80 billion brain cells - lots to work with

synaptic pruning is an ongoing process; what's gone is gone; too bad

new synapses - new connections - new pathways - these are ongoing activities of a healthy human brain - is your brain healthy

new and different thoughts and actions build new and different connections (accordingly), in that same while synaptic-pruning snips away unused paths and unused connections, improving the possibility for rebuilding a new kind of naturalness - new balance - new focus - new rhythm - when re-designed accordingly

Discovery: Odds-beaters use their natural gifts; they synchronize their gifts and their mission with their vision. Odds-beaters have a vision that is greater than self. Odds-beaters recognize when they get a break and a new path opens; they are very prepared to make the jump and take it.

Action Plan: Realize what you have - the incredible gift that life has bestowed you (WITHSTAND EVERY REJECTION - COMMIT). Every new era is marked by a challenge that reveals the true nature of its character, its soul, its heart, our very being; a challenge so pervasive, so corrosive, so corrupting, it indulges our need for respite; a challenge that demands a new breed - A Breed Beyond The Hero.

No doubt you've heard about the holy grail. It is a legend told differently through different literary and religious traditions. You are probably most familiar with it as the chalice used by Jesus in the last supper, and that the rich man, Joseph of Arimithea who begged for the body of Christ after his crucifixtion, filled it with the blood of Christ, and kept it, and hid it.

You probably also have heard of King Arthur and the Knights of The Round Table, and also of the many extravagant expeditions dispatched to retrieve this hidden cup, and of reported miracles associated with it, and of awful killings.

You might even say to me you know exactly where that cup is today. Awesome.

You probably also guessed I am not about to delve into any detail of the whats and whos and whens and whereabouts of said cup or chalice.

You are correct.

But, for sure I do want to share something about it. Something spectacular. And for whatever it is worth I am calling this spectacular thing, this Golden Chalice, a Hand-Me-Down. And that that it is incredibly amazing.

Who knows, you may also be ready to rush in to correct me, and even tell me that you are quite familiar with hand-me-downs, and that you find very little to associate hand-me-downs with incredible and spectacular and amazing and awesome, even worse to be told that from here on out this hand-me-down will become for you a never-will-you-ever-forget-it thing. Well, that's a pity.

However, that is exactly what is about to happen now.

Oh, let me ease the suspense a little, give you another breather - watch this.

Hmm?

Where was I? Yes. My Golden Chalice - Hand-Me-Downs - that third pole of a thing that has catapulted so many "blessed" folks into new orbits. A thing that opens up pathways beyond known limits and facilitates overcoming challenges.

The Chalice! So many beautiful components to it. Sometimes I think of it as the ring. There is so much I could tell. Sometimes it takes me back to the first gifts I ever recieved from friends: Rexford and Theodore. Oooh! Unforgettable memory. Sometimes I think of it as pure love. Goosebumps. Now I know it as a Golden Chalice - glittering through my entire being. The most awesome hand-me-down.

When Jesus used the cup and passed it around to his friends, as told in the story of his Last Supper, he said, "Do this in remembrance of me." Well, indeed, he did say more than that, but this is not a sermon, this is pure unadulaterated remarkable excitement.

You see, to this day, throughout christendom, practically every day, you find folks here, there and everywhere passing around some semblance of a chalice or cup reminding each other to remember: it's been handed down literally from hand to hand, lip to lip, tear to tear, joy to joy, from then till now. It's a hand-me-down!

And I've noticed something that always gets me revved up and raring to go, a thing, oh how I wish folks would grab and take hold. Every odds-beater I have met or am inspired by who beats his or her odds every time has a gift, a get, and a hand-me-down - something way bigger than the self that they are devoted to passing on, something that lifts others up, something that sets the marks of love on breaths of life - yes, a hand-me-down. Martin Luther King. Helen Keller. Rosa Parks. Frederick Douglas. St. Francis of Assisi. Way bigger than self - a hand-me-down. Glo-rey! Oh, Jesus. What a man, what a man, what a mighty good man.
