Rejoice in the Lord always. Let mel say it again: REJOICE! Let your gentleness be obvious to everyone. The Lord is near. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Go ahead: LAUGH with Joy; you are a new creation. LAUGH!

RECLAIM “When we exclude anybody, we have left out who God is in the midst of us.” And that's another cool thing my Senior Pastor told us.

"I know not all that may be coming, but be it what it will, I'll go to it laughing.”
― Herman Melville
"I love people who make me laugh. I honestly think it's the thing I like most, to laugh. It cures a multitude of ills. It's probably the most important thing in a person.”
― Audrey Hepburn
"Your beliefs become your thoughts,
Your thoughts become your words,
Your words become your actions,
Your actions become your habits,
Your habits become your values,
Your values become your destiny."
― Mahatma Gandhi
Where is that sacred space? This was not the Hard Question. The Hard Question was coming, and yet it did not have to come; it is always here. Always present. Just brushed aside. Not framed for the crossed eye. There IS a sacred space in each of us. Inviolate! The home of love. A place of truth. Could it ever be desolate? Sullied? Sold out? Re-purchased? Un-touched? While in the vicinity of that private space we happened upon a treat, an easy question - what is your life for - a question served to each of us in two bite-sized slices - like wedges of lime stripped of its rhine. It was not split on the edge of a sparkling quencher and served, rather, it was slipped upon tongues turned in from the common heat. SLICE ONE: Are you here enroute to heaven or here for keys to heaven? How swiftly we rushed in to answer; how strangely our puckered lips (unnerved hearing each other's smack) split minds stubbornly holding to their forts, being pushed and pulled, back and forth - tongue-dry - while a new game was being prepared to serve the second slice - salted. Indeed, what makes a question hard is not the question; it is avoidance. |

Blindfolded, self-aware, we arrived, each of us thinking all the others could see, convinced we were about to pin our tails on the donkey. It was fun being so crazy - shuffling around amidst the noises - left, right, left, right, left, right, straight ahead. We stuck our tails on that wall - the donkey! Then our blindfolds were removed. We laughed! We laughed at the sight of our tails on that wall. Uncomfortable laughter! Duped? Awakened? Infuriated? Inspired? Aroused - each of us seeing where we had placed our tails, and on what, and in what, and with what else. Blindly! Those were our furry tails on that wall, tails each of us created exemplary of our most cherished values. And there mine was too! Like a mockery! But this game was not over, for the salted slice was not yet served, and that donkey was laughing. Aroused! |
It was still daylight when we were sent to our private spaces. There is a sacred space in all of us. Not everyone knows exactly where that is. Truth can be found outside of it, though it settles best inside of it. Some love can be found outside of it too. So it is with passion. We went to that private space, that quiet space, sacred or not, to answer the question - the easy question - for what makes a question hard is not the question; it is the impact of its answer. "Answer honestly and unambiguously; you alone will see it!" We were told. That ought to be a good enough reason to get to the heart of the matter, but as it would turn out, honest or not, we are quite aware of our own truth, no matter how deeply we bury it. It is an ornery child. So we wrote our responses, each of us upon our own white sheet of paper - no hurry - the which each of us had the joy (or hilarity) of watching being burned to ashes and blown to the wind. We were encouraged to go deep into that private space where we are completely free to imagine or realize that our place in heaven is guaranteed, our access to heaven is guaranteed, our trip to heaven is guaranteed; there is no possibility of retreat or revocation. Guaranteed! No one can take it from us now. On arrival and in that confidence each of us was served that second slice - the easy question - salted! SLICE TWO: All obstacles removed what will you go and do right now? That is what we answered. That is what we burned. That is what we blew to the wind from atop a hill. You can too. Then each of us returned to our places and privately found, declared on similar white paper and in the same bold print, this: Revealed to your eyes only was the essence of your true character! I smiled! For a second or two I felt brilliant, as if I had discovered a genuine secret from the deal, a kind of trick: aha, revealed not to me alone, revealed to God. I was still smiling when it hit me: oh-no, God knew all along! God knew me then; God knows me now! Revealed to me alone. Awakened! I smiled. My character! The contours of my values! The shape of my sacred space! Revealed! A few were crying - I don't know why, but I do know what makes a question hard is not the question, it is the cost of the answer - then we were reminded: burned to ashes, blown to the wind! My heart lept and I did what I do naturally when a new moment awakes my joy, my passion, my love, my wonder; I laughed. Laughter is such a sweet release. In such moments I laugh of lightness and of gratitude. I laugh at funny too! Don't you? "Rejoice!" I felt strong. It all caused me to reflect on two of the most revealing moments I have ever experienced. What about you? What is your life for? |

Laughter is the sound
of the soul dancing.
So the craftsman encourages the smelter,
And he who smooths metal with the hammer encourages him who beats the anvil,
Saying of the soldering, “It is good”;
And he fastens it with nails,
So that it will not totter.
